Yesterday, May 31, we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus’ followers and gave them the ability to speak in other languages (Acts 2:1-12). This wasn’t the first time that Jesus sent out his followers to preach in his name (Mt 10:5-15; Lk 9:1-6; Lk 10:1-12). What makes this time different is the presence of the Holy Spirit.
In effect, the Holy Spirit helped the Apostles ‘level up’ their ministry abilities to carry out the mission Jesus gave them, namely to take his message to all people.
As I celebrated Pentecost, I wondered, where are the places that I am being invited to level up?
Leveling up gives me the impression of video games, and Mario eating mushrooms to grow. And although I love mushrooms, I’m pretty sure that’s not literally what I’m supposed to do right now.
Leveling up also brings to mind the idea of developing new or stronger powers. Perhaps, you have more stamina, lives, or abilities. Which begs the question: what are the areas that I feel like I need to increase my stamina, my abilities, or my life?
I don’t have a definitive answer right now. There are some broad stroke ideas: writing, physical health, financial (which sounds like my six-month challenge), but the thoughts are still a little too nebulous to share right now.
I’m also struck by the emphasis on the immediacy of action that the Apostles had. They didn’t wait and take a grammar test to ensure they had an accurate grasp of the languages they were suddenly speaking. They left the room and began preaching. There is an invitation to simply follow the energy by doing something. I can always philosophize about the experience later, and adapt plans as needed.
So, I put the question to you: as we continue living in this unique time, and approach summer, what are the areas where you need to level up?
